About US

Albatross are a contemporary new writing theatre collective based in the North East of England. We believe in the healing power of creativity. We believe in theatre that asks big questions but isn’t afraid to have fun. We believe that a night at the theatre is an event that brings us all together, regardless of age, background or belief; a shared experience that helps us to feel less alone. We believe in theatre that allows us to look at ourselves and the world around us a bit differently.

We are inspired by the albatross. This famous seabird, with the largest wingspan, needs time to take off, but once airborne she will cover the greatest distance. We don't rush our theatre, but instead take time to develop excellent quality work, built on meaningful collaborations. Everyone deserves a chance to experience the healing power of creativity, no matter what stage of life they’re in, or how long it takes them to get going. Above all we aim to produce plays that will make you laugh and cry with stories, characters, and voices that stay with you long after you’ve left the building.

Our Mission

  1. To unleash the healing power of creativity for individuals, organisations, communities and places.

  2. To create popular story-based theatre that explores big questions about our lives and the worlds around us.

  3. To make original theatre that is exciting, accessible and resonates with audiences.

  4. To work with a range of practitioners from different art forms (musicians, film makers and choreographers) to bring variety and surprise to our work.

  5. To find and nurture hidden talent. To produce, promote and encourage new writers who live in or come from the North East of England regardless of age or background (but with an emphasis on encouraging artists aged 25+).

  6. To celebrate unique, diverse, and under-represented people, stories, and places.

  7. To ensure that audiences and collaborators feel seen, heard, and valued.

Our Values

  1. To be accessible - reaching audiences and collaborators who might not feel that theatre is for them.

  2. To be brave - asking big questions and facilitating collective spirit.

  3. To be fair - paying and valuing collaborating artists properly, making our work affordable.

  4. To be inclusive - providing access to opportunities for a wide range of people regardless of background, experience or age.

  5. To produce work of the highest quality - this means taking time to get things right.
